It's almost as if the car sacrificed itself because it couldn't stand the mockery of the paint scheme..

That harlequin is either a replica or has had extensive paintwork done. Not sure why you would paint the mirrors and front bumper...

Based on this, I think it might be the real thing:
For insurance and registration purposes, they would actually just call it "blue."

Yea. If you do a GIS you see all sorts of not real (and not at all a Golf) Harlequins. There's so many I can't keep track of which panels should be which color.

And now it's related!
Edit: good god the formatting sucks, but it's there... Thanks Kinja.

Yeah, I have that chart saved and consulted it, but the mirrors and bumper are black, not blue. Hood is also blatantly not yellow.

See the other reply to this post. There's a handy chart floating around. IIRC, they did the Polo as a harlequin first, but people have now made harlequins out of a bunch of different things.

Ha! Thanks, yeah it appears that the "New and Improved" Kinja is not going to address formatting....

Nice catch. I couldn't tell the color of the hood because it appears to be ON FIRE.

I never realized there were different combinations. Good to know.

Yeah, but the fire hasn't escaped the confines of the bay, so I doubt it burned all the paint off already.

You're right. Damn, this guy was so close to achieving his dream (completing his replica, I assume..)

Real harlequins are desirable and command 5k+, whereas even a pristine mkIII golf maxes out at about 4500.
Even replicas (like this one most likely is) are still worth more than you'd imagine.

As a VW guy you'd think I'd know that (really a TDI guy). How can you tell this one's a replica?

The color of the hood, front bumper, and mirrors is wrong. It could be a real one that's been in an accident or (awfully) customized, but I can't see someone paying the premium for one of these just to paint it another color.
